Do you love math? Are you great at puzzles? Then MathCounts is for you!!
MATHCOUNTS is a national coaching and competition program designed to stimulate 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students' interest and achievement in mathematics. Teachers and volunteers coach student mathletes in school beginning each fall and continuing through the year. Participating schools select students to compete as teams and as individuals in on-site competitions. Students compete in a local meet in February. Winners progress to state contests in March. The top scorers and top coach at the state competition represent their state at the national finals.
The MATHCOUNTS competition includes the following rounds:
- Sprint Round: 30 questions in 40 minutes; students work individually; no calculators permitted
- Target Round: 4 pairs of questions; 6 minutes per pair of questions; students work individually; calculators are permitted
- Team Round: 10 questions in 20 minutes; 4 team members work together; calculators are permitted
- Countdown Round (Unofficial): Fast-paced round where students battle head-to-head in a test of speed and accuracy; top 12 students participate; results do not determine competition winner or advancement to the State Competition.
Tryouts are held annually in late September.
